Digital rock

During the 1990s, Trond Engum was one of the founders of the experimental metal band The Third and the Mortal. Now he is an assistant professor at NTNU, and earlier this year, defended an artistic development project that is the equivalent of a doctorate entitled “Beat the Distance. Music technological strategies for composition and production.” He is working to develop tools that allow a performer to use digital studio technology while on stage, alone or with others. In short, he wants to move the studio onto the stage, essentially democratizing the technology. The picture shows him holding a self-constructed guitar with two remote controls, which allow him to control a digital sound studio as he plays.
