Smart NTNU bolt represents Norway

New technology makes mines safer.

Dynamic Rock Support will represent Norway in the “European Business Awards”
competition. The company has developed a new rock reinforcing bolt for use in mines and tunnels. The so-called D-bolt (deformable bolt) is slightly crooked, which allows the steel
in the bolt to deform freely and absorb far more energy than conventional rock reinforcing
bolts.

It also has a longer life than current rebar bolts, increasing safety and reducing the cost of
rock support. The technology has been developed by NTNU’s Professor Charlie C. Li from
the Department of Geology and Mineral Resources Engineering. The company was purchased this winter by Normet, a Finnish mining equipment supplier. The winner of the competition
will be announced in April 2014.
