More than fifty Norwegian dementia sufferers have been using GPS for periods varying from several weeks to up to a year. The results show that the technology helps both sufferers and their next of kin achieve an increased sense of security, freedom and quality of life. The Trygge Spor has the goal to develop GPS systems with component sensors and support systems to monitor the movements of dementia sufferers. SINTEF Project Manager Dag Ausen says that headlines about welfare technology are all about ”sales drives” and ”pie-in-the-sky” projects with no relation to real life, and that Trygge Spor is a major step forward because users can now demonstrate the effects and benefits over time.
