Teaching with the telly
Popular culture must supplement the arts in school educational projects, says Geir Zakariassen,
a PhD candidate at NTNU. He is working with reality TV as a gateway to the study of Norwegian subjects, and believes that school students can use these concepts in their understanding of texts and their perceptions of reality. He also believes that popular TV as a category can offer intellectual challenges and the ability to conceptualize important issues. Texts based on popular culture can also lower barriers to the study of Norwegian and make it more accessible to students, he says.
