A better 3D camera for space exploration
Both NASA and the ESA are looking for improved camera systems for space exploration. They are searching for high-quality cameras that will enable equipment craft to navigate safely, with adequate gripping and precise docking capabilities. Researchers at SINTEF have carried out a study looking into several planned future space projects. They have evaluated existing technologies and have made an assessment of how these can be modified and adapted to applications in space. They have just submitted their report to the ESA. Next year a prototype will be built for testing and evaluation together with their consortium partners – the French company Thales Alenia Space and the Danish firm Terma.
